The Honouree

Rabbi Alan Green

The Jewish National Fund of Canada – Manitoba and Saskatchewan Region is proud to honour Rabbi Alan Green, Senior Rabbi of Shaarey Zedek Congregation at this year’s Negev Gala to be held on Monday, May 29th at the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

“Rabbi Green is very deserving of this tribute. He has touched many lives through his unwavering commitment to Israel and the Jewish and local communities in Winnipeg”, stated Manitoba & Saskatchewan JNF Board President Jessica Cogan.

Our 2017 Negev Gala honouree is truly humbled by this recognition. “I want to thank the Jewish National Fund for considering me for such a fantastic honour. Honestly, my head is still spinning!”. He is looking forward to celebrating with the entire community at the Gala.

Each year the net proceeds generated from the Negev Gala support a very worthy project in Israel and Rabbi Green has chosen to support the establishment of the World Jewish Museum in Tel-Aviv.

Rabbi Alan Green was born in Los Angeles, California where he lived for most of his first 39 years.  He grew up at Congregation Adat Ariel in Valley Village, California where he was taken under the wing of Cantor Allan Michelson, one of the great Hazzanim of his generation.  Rabbi Green received his BA and MA in the History of Religions from UCLA, and studied Rabbinic Literature for three years at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles.  He received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, past professor of Religious Studies at the University of Manitoba, and founder and Dean of the Aleph Alliance for Jewish Renewal, in 1991.

Besides Cantor Michelson and Rabbi Schachter-Shalomi, Rabbi Green’s other significant spiritual influences include His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Rabbi Dr. Arthur Green, and Dr. Kays W. Bolleh, who for many years was Professor of the History of Religions at UCLA. For five years, Rabbi Green was spiritual leader of Temple B’nai Emet in Montebello, California before coming to Winnipeg in 1992 and serving as spiritual leader of Beth Israel Congregation until the year 2000.

Rabbi Green has served as Senior Rabbi of Shaarey Zedek Congregation since the fall of 2000.

He has been married to Chaya and her triplets, Daniel, Eve, and Shoshanah, since 1990.  He calls his move to Winnipeg “one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

Rabbi Green is a passionate supporter and advocate of the State of Israel; he has always made himself available to help the Jewish National Fund (and other Israeli based organizations in Winnipeg); during the last 16 years he has been the one making the High Holidays Appeal on behalf of JNF at Shaarey Zedek Congregation.

For more than 6 decades the Negev Gala has honoured outstanding leaders in the Community.

The Project

The funds raised at this year’s Negev Gala will be directed towards The World’s Jewish Museum in Tel Aviv. The museum will attest  to the significance of outstanding Jewish attainment and intellectual output, and showcase how these contributions have shaped the path of humankind. Whether working in a laboratory or a place of business, Jewish thinkers have transformed fundamental elements of modern life for all the world’s citizens. Exhibitions and programs will also document the connection between the world’s Jewish peoples and the land of Israel. Visitors will encounter challenging theories, ground-breaking inventions, and many moments of novelty, humor and beauty.

In the music world today, there are very few singers who combine a rare quality of voice with special theatrical talents. Shlomit Aharon is such a singer. Therefore, it is no wonder that she is one of the most admired Israeli singers of our decade.

Shlomit has been a professional singer since the age of sixteen. She became well known as a soloist in several successful stage productions, and joined one of the most popular pop groups in Israel, HABIBI.

As their soloist, she won several artistic awards. Twice among them: The Harp of David (the equivalent of the American Tony Award).

Shlomit starred in numerous television specials and radio shows, performed in many concerts in Israel and all over Europe, South America, Australia and the United States. In Germany, she performed as the star of The Alleluyah Broadway Show, produced by Mama Concert.

Shlomit played the role of “Eponine” in Les Miserables, in the Israeli stage recreation of one of Broadway’s greatest hits. She also starred as “Mrs. Johnston” in Willie Russel’s successful West End musical Blood Brothers.

Shlomit was chosen to represent Israel in four international song concerts: Eurovision (with HABIBI), the Tsopot Festival in Poland, and twice in the International Song Festival in Vina dl Mar, Chile.

She released over 20 albums during her career.

Shlomit performs a selection of her favourite melodies and presents a unique, exciting and moving interpretation of old Israeli classics. In any format a musical experience, featuring great Israeli, Jewish and International Classics with Shlomit, promises to be an unforgettable experience.
